Abu Dhabi: A media strategy was launched yesterday to counter the stereotyped portrayal of Arab women. The strategy will also help women to gain their rights in society.

The conference welcomed the launch of the media strategy as well as a network for immigrant Arab women by Her Highness Shaikha Fatima Bint Mubarak, Chairwoman of the UAE General Women's Union and Chairwoman of the Arab Women's Organisation.

The strategy aims to build a positive picture of Arab women in the media and spread awareness of women's issues to counter the stereotypes. It also supports efforts to win women's rights and equality.

Time frame

The strategy was put forward by a group of Arab experts and academics with a time frame of 2010 to 2015. The network meanwhile will provide immigrant women with a useful database and information to settle in any non-Arab country and to establish a database.

Dr Fatma Al Sayeg, history teacher at UAE University, told Gulf News after the launch: "The strategy is very modern and will be effective in changing the image and perception of Arab women through an effective tool - media."

She added: "I think it is a very vital tool to make a difference in women's reality."
