Speeding car ran over an Indian national on Shamal-Al Rams Street while another driver has miracle escape
Ras Al Khaimah: A speeding car ran over an Indian national on Shamal-Al Rams Street and later seriously injured another compatriot.
The 37-year-old Indian national - identified as M.H. - was pronounced dead at the accident scene and his 60-year-old compatriot - identified as M.K. - suffered serious injuries and was taken to the intensive care unit (ICU) of the hospital.
The speeding car was driven by a 26-year-old Emirati - identified as A.M. - was arrested after the accident.
Colonel Hassan Al Jeeda, who heads the Traffic Section at the Traffic and Licensing Department, said that the Emirati driver was alone in his vehicle on the street heading to Al Nakheel area, and the cause of the accident was mainly attributed to speeding.
Col Al Jeeda said that the accident happened when the speeding driver tried to avoid the Indian national who was taking his first step to cross the street without paying attention to the traffic flow.
The driver lost control of his vehicle which swerved and ran over the other Indian victim, who suffered fatal injuries.
The vehicle then rammed into a lamp post and the Emirati driver jumped out of it and escaped from the accident with light injuries.
The Emirati driver was taken to hospital for treatment but was later discharged. The vehicle was badly damaged.
The case has been referred to Public Prosecution for further investigation after Police launched an intensive investigation.
According to the police records, a total of 70 people have lost their lives in Ras Al Khaimah in road accidents since the beginning of the year (2009), of whom 31 were Emiratis and 39 expatriates of different nationalities.
Colonel Al Jeeda said that speeding was still the main traffic problem in the emirate, and urged drivers to stick to speed limits announced put in place by authorities after thorough research.
He stressed that speeding does not give the driver the chance to use the brakes and control the car effectively.
Meanwhile, a Jordanian national miraculously survived a road accident on the Emirates Road in Ras Al Khaimah when he turned over his vehicle which went deep into the desert sand.
A senior officer at the emirate’s Traffic and Licensing Department said that the victim was hospitalized and his vehicle was badly damaged in the accident.
The officer said that the victim lost control over his vehicle on Exit No. 122 on the Emirates Road, where the vehicle overturned several times and landed deep in the sand. The accident was reported to the emirate’s Police by other vehicles passing by. Police vehicles arrived to the accident scene and rushed the victim to the hospital.
