The ladies night, besides the 25% discount and free drinks, throws up some thoroughly enjoyable culinary surprises
DUBAI: It’s the ladies night at Solis Beach Club every Tuesday! And all you ladies out there, you don’t want to miss it!
With two free drinks and 25 per cent off on the menu, I simply had to take the offer.
The restaurant is located in the Tiara Residences in Palm Jumeirah, overlooking the beach. The crowd is mixed but women are definitely in larger numbers.
I take a colleague along and we settle down in the outdoors (the weather being kind to us).
Scanning the menu, we go with the Japanese Crispy Calamari (Dh45) and Wasabi King Prawns (Dh53) as starters. Served with Arugula salad, chilli and a soya reduction sauce, the ring-shaped calamari is a great way to start your meal. The calmari is prepared by slicing squid tentacles into rings half-inch to three-fourths of an inch in width. They are marinated with chicken stock powder and lemon juice and then deep fried. The dish makes a great crispy starter.
But then the Wasabi King Prawns, deep fried and dipped in wasabi mayonnaise sauce, are equally delightful as starters. Its preparation involves peeling king prawns and marinating it with chopped coriander leaves, egg white, white pepper, and two tablespoons of rice and corn flour. Just before deep frying the prawns the flours are dusted off to achieve the right crispiness to the starter.
Just as we are getting busy with the starters, the waiter comes by to take our order for the main course. It’s the ‘Milk-fed Australian Lamb Chops’ (Dh95) for my friend while I settle for a traditional Thai Green Curry (Dh65-Dh75). The milk-fed Australian Lamb Chops are served with Potato Gratin (mashed potatoes), Provencal Vegetables (a French stewed vegetarian dish). “It’s just fabulous,” says my friend, adding the mashed potatoes are in a league of their own.
My Thai curry, served with jasmine rice, does not disappoint me either. There is abundant flavour coming from the coriander, basil, lemongrass and a host of vegetables and chicken that go into making this curry. When mixed with a soft steamed rice, the dish just melts in your mouth.
But it is the Chocolate Fondant served with a vanilla bean ice-cream (Dh38) that is the highlight of the dinner. The warm, luscious, dark chocolate baby cake with extra chocolate sauce and the cold ice-cream on the side is just too good to resist. We literally licked our spoons away. This dessert leaves you feeling guilty for wasting any bit of it.
