New book provides informative glimpses into Middle East culture and artifacts

Deira City Centre launched a glossy reference book yesterday, aimed at increasing awareness about the cultural treasures from the Middle East and Gulf region.

Entitled Arabian Treasures: A tribute to tradition, heritage and craftsmanship, the book has been produced and published by GatewayGBC. It was released to commemorate the opening of the Arabian Treasures retail section of the shopping mall.

Long history

"Dubai has a long history as a major commercial centre and has been dealing for centuries in artifacts like carpets, metal, wood carvings and jewellery," said Jim Badour, vice-president and general manager of the mall.

"One of the reasons why so many people choose to visit or relocate to the emirate is to experience the rich and diverse culture.

"For those unfamiliar with the items and the local culture, shopping can sometimes be an intimidating experience as much of the information about the items is available only by word of mouth.

"This book which is packed with absorbing information will help take the mystery out of shopping for many of the local items, for which the region is known."

The 110-page hard-bound coffee table book contains a wealth of information about the various art objects. Divided into sections, the book deals at length with oriental carpets, textiles, wooden carvings and objects made of metal. Each of the chapters offers interesting reading about the history of the art, with intricate details of the craftsmanship.

Genuine items

It also includes valuable information for potential buyers, which helps them to recognise genuine items of art and understand the differences between the various artifacts available at the shops.

The last section of the book is devoted to the shops which are part of the Arabian Treasures retail section.

"This book intends to educate readers who may already hold an interest in oriental carpets, handicrafts and artifacts originating within this region," Badour said.

"It is also expected to stimulate an interest in those who may be experiencing the rich heritage for the first time," added Barry Gray, managing director, GatewayGBC.

"We have had a long and fruitful association with Deira City Centre and are happy that the relationship has led to the production of this book, which will go a long way towards building awareness."

The Arabian Treasures retail section at Deira City Centre was opened last year and has 14 outlets that specialise in artifacts from the region. It offers buyers a chance to pick up genuine quality handicrafts while shopping in the comfort and luxury of a shopping mall.
