Sharjah: A fire broke out at a garments and shoe factory on Sunday evening, causing widespread damage to the contents and the adjacent warehouse.

The factory is located at the Al Hamriyah free zone of Sharjah, a Civil Defence official told Gulf News.

The fire broke out at 6.30pm on Sunday and raged for more than four hours before it was put out.

The Sharjah Civil Defence, in cooperation with Ajman and Umm Al Quwain forces, managed to bring the fire under control. No injuries were reported.

A rescue team evacuated the workers of the factory and nearby buildings to ensure their safety.

Police patrols formed units to close down all roads leading to the factory, the official added, which allowed firefighters and ambulance personnel to enter the area without obstruction, leading to the fire being brought under control quickly, he added.

Official pointed out that “despite the severity of the fire and the presence of strong winds. firefighters managed to stop the fire from spreading to other warehouses in the area and were able to control the fire.”

The site of the fire is still under the control of the Sharjah Civil Defence as the gutted material is flammable material and another fire could be sparked again,

”The site will be with us until tomorrow to make sure that there are no more fires,” he added

The site will later be handed to the forensic laboratory to determine the cause of the fire.
