Abu Dhabi: The 82-year-old Emirati male patient diagnosed with the Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (Mers-CoV) infection is currently in stable condition, a senior health official said in the capital today (Sunday).

He is under observation at a public hospital in the capital, and the UAE Ministry of Health is closely monitoring the case along with the Health Authority Abu Dhabi (HAAD), the HAAD official told Gulf News.

The patient, who also suffers from multiple myeloma, represents the first case to be diagnosed with Mers-CoV (previously referred to as novel coronavirus) in the UAE. The announcement of the diagnosis was made on July 11, and state news media WAM reported at the time that he was admitted in the intensive care unit.
