Woman wins seat in first UAE poll

Abu Dhabi/Fujairah: A woman was among the six victorious candidates in the first elections to the Federal National Council in Abu Dhabi and Fujairah on Saturday.

The winners praised the vision of Their Highnesses the Rulers of the emirates and vowed to work for the UAE's development.

Dr Amal Abdullah Juma Karam Al Qubaisi became the first woman to be elected to the council. The other winners in Abu Dhabi were Mohammad Mohammad Ali Fadil Al Hameli, former FNC Deputy Speaker Ahmad Shabeeb Mohammad Al Daheri and Rashid Musabbah Al Kindi Ali Marar.

The turnout in Abu Dhabi was 60.2 per cent, with 1,048 voters casting their ballots. The total number of votes polled was 3,630.

In Fujairah, the turnout was 80 per cent, and the winners were Sultan Ahmad Al Moadhen Danhani and Ahmad Saeed Abdullah Al Danhani.

"The victory of a woman in FNC polls reflects their success in all fields and the support of the political leadership," said Dr Anwar Mohammad Gargash, Minister of State for FNC Affairs.

  • Mohammad Mohammad Ali Fadel Al Hameli - 304 votes
  • Ahmad Shabeeb Mohammad Al Daheri - 302 votes
  • Amal Abdullah Juma Karam Al Qubaisi - 265 votes
  • Rashid Musabbah Al Kindi Ali Marar - 194 votes

Fujairah

  • Sultan Ahmad Al Moadhen Danhani -122 votes
  • Ahmad Saeed Al Danhani - 94 votes

Winners subject to challenges against vote count.
