Abu Dhabi: UAE astronomers have successfully captured rare daytime images of the new crescent moon marking the start of Rabi Al Awwal 1447 AH, a month of special significance across the Muslim world.

The Al Khatim Astronomical Observatory, operated by the International Astronomy Centre in Abu Dhabi, photographed the crescent on Sunday, 24 August 2025, at 3pm local time.

At the time of capture, the moon was 30.5 hours old and positioned 14 degrees from the sun. The clarity of the crescent varied depending on the number of frames combined — with the first image created from a single frame, while others were produced by stacking hundreds or even thousands of frames to improve visibility.

The observatory team included Osama Ghannam, Anas Mohammed, Khalfan Al Nuaimi and Mohammad Odeh.
