The Environmental Research and Wildlife Development Agency, in conjunction with the Abu Dhabi Educational Zone, is holding a workshop for 25 nominated preparatory government school science teachers.

The workshop, which began on Saturday, will conclude on Tues-day.

The courses are aimed to heko teachers update their environmental knowledge and enable them to acquaint students with the latest environmental issues at the local, regional and international levels.

"The agency places great importance on environmental awareness programmes and deems it a necessity to educate students, who are the hope of the future, about issues concerning their environment," said Secretary-General Majid Al Mansouri, in his inaugural speech delivered on his behalf by Abdullah Zamzam, Agency's Assistant Secretary-General for Finance and Administration.

The agency also seeks to update the teachers and supervisors on environmental research programmes and issues facing the region.

Al Mansouri added that the workshop coincides with the start of the new school year. "The topics covered ranged from marine environment, pollution, and waste management to the role of the family pertaining to care for the environment and Islam's say on the matter."

Lecturers include experts from the UAE University's Faculty of Science and the Agriculture and Human and Social Sciences Department, the National Drilling Company (NDC) and Emirates Environmental Group (EEG).

"The ERWDA hopes this is the beginning and not the end, and it encourages teachers to direct any questions about the environment that they may have," he said.
