Fresh out of high school and into college, this writer takes you through a freshman's first steps on campus

DAY 0

College. A new kingdom. A new land to conquer.
For generations, this institution of knowledge has managed to shake us out of our comfort zones. Just when you thought your grade 12 exams were finally over, you've got another mountain to climb: college admission.

Some pray while waiting for their exam results. And on receiving them, rush to get accepted in a college of choice.

Everything done, we reach home, relax with a cup of tea and switch on the TV. Relief sinks in. It's over… it's finally over. And the moment for which you've been preparing for 14 years is drawing closer and closer.

It's all part of the cycle. Kindergarten, primary, elementary, secondary and finally high school. You study hard in high school to get into college and you study hard in college to get a job. The first stage is over. And the second is about to begin.

'University sapiens'

What you're unaware of is the Amazon jungle awaiting you. As you may know, the Amazon jungle has the greatest variety of species known to man. Significantly 98 per cent of the species have yet to be discovered. So beware freshmen, of the university sapiens.

You need know exactly how to behave in your first year. Sure, who am I to tell you that! But better it be me than your maths teacher! Hence:

Freshmen's Survival Guide

  • You might know a few people in college already. But be a bit careful with those you don't know.
  • Take refuge in your relationship with seniors. They're an effective shield and guide.
  • No matter how intelligent you may be, don't show it off. All that honey attracts is many bees. Keep a cool attitude towards everything.
  • Interaction is the key to surviving your college years. Try to participate in college activities. Don't be afraid of expanding your list of acquaintances.
  • Keep a good relationship with your teachers, (without sucking up to them!). Don't be afraid to crack jokes if you're on good terms with them.
  • Don't judge others! You have no right to do so. A person may not be fashionable, but he/she could turn out to be a good friend. Likewise, a fashionable person may not be intellectual, but he/she could turn out to be a better pal.
  • Last, but most important: Be yourself. Believe me, your path will be crowded with people trying to mould you into being 'cool'. So be firm; don't give in to their demands. Nothing is worth compromising your character.

Right now, you might be wondering who I am. However, I'll leave the mystery to your imagination.

Until next time
