Dubai: The search is now on for the best English language teachers in the Arabic-speaking world.

English Language Teachers (ELTs) have been invited to apply for the British Council ELTons awards 2011, to highlight quality and innovation in the profession.

British Council English Language Innovation Head Michael Carrier said the awards had become an essential fixture on the ELT calendar.

"They are a wonderful opportunity to showcase innovative ELT products and creative ELT authors from around the world, and we are very proud to be able to bring the ELT community together to celebrate innovation in our profession," he said.

The international awards are in their ninth year and is sponsored by Cambridge ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages).

There are two (of three) categories to which ELT professionals in the Arabic-speaking world can apply — the Cambridge ESOL International Award for Innovation and The Macmillan Education Award for Innovative Writing.

Unpublished writers

The Macmillan Education Award for Innovative Writing, now in its second year, is sponsored by Macmillan Education and gives unpublished writers the opportunity to win a £1,000 (Dh5,700) prize and have their work published.

The Cambridge ESOL International Award for Innovation rewards published ELT products and services developed around the world or in the United Kingdom.

This year, the British Council Lifetime Achievement Award is being introduced, to reward an ELT who has made a substantial contribution to the profession.

Any ELT professional can apply for consideration in one of the categories which include authors, teachers, trainers and publishers.

The deadline for submissions is 30 September and applications will be judged by a panel of ELT experts.

The winners will be announced at a prestigious ELTons awards ceremony that will be held in London on March 3, 2011.

Each winning entry comes with a cash prize and will become part of a growing network of ELTons alumni around the world.
