Al Dhaid Fort is one of the oldest historical landmarks in Sharjah’s Central Region, with origins dating back to the second half of the 18th century—long before the establishment of the city itself. Rebuilt to its former glory, the fort now houses a beautifully curated museum dedicated to the history and traditions of Al Dhaid, including local heritage practices such as falconry.

The square-shaped structure, measuring 32 metres in length and 26 metres in width, was first constructed in 1820 during the reign of Sheikh Sultan bin Saqr Al Qasimi, then Ruler of Sharjah. In 2022, His Highness Dr Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, officially inaugurated the restored Al Dhaid Fort, marking the beginning of a new cultural chapter.

The fort is part of a larger development project that will feature additional facilities designed to enhance Sharjah’s historical and tourism infrastructure. Today, several rooms of the fort have been transformed into exhibition halls that display artefacts showcasing the rich cultural and historical legacy of Al Dhaid. One hall features essential documents related to the region and the fort itself, sourced from the British Archives as well as local writings that recount geographical, political, and social events.

Designed with visitors in mind, the museum combines authenticity with comfort. The ground-floor walkway and interior rooms have been enclosed in glass, allowing guests to explore the exhibits in air-conditioned comfort while still appreciating the fort’s historic architecture. Clear information panels and knowledgeable guides further enrich the visitor experience.

In 2023, Al Dhaid Fort was included as one of the venues of the Sharjah Light Festival, highlighting its cultural significance and historical value.

Located in a fertile oasis, the city of Al Dhaid is known for its rich soil, plentiful water, and expansive farmlands, making it one of the UAE’s foremost agricultural centres and an enduring symbol of Sharjah’s heritage.
