Sharjah: An Arab man has been arrested for assaulting his seven-year-old son.

The Egyptian child was brought into Al Qasimi Hospital on Wednesday morning by his father, who claimed that he had fallen.

However, doctors suspected foul play as the child had severe injuries to his face, hands and legs and signs of suffering blows to the head.

The doctor in charge of the case filed a report with Sharjah Police and the Social Services Department’s child protection centre, following which police officials went to the hospital.

Initial investigations revealed the Egyptian man, who lives in the Al Nahda area of Sharjah, had beaten his son, identified as A.T.S. after discovering he had taken Dh100 from him and shared it out among his friends.

The case is with Al Buhairah Police.

The child protection centre, touted as one of the first of its kind in the region when it was formed in 2007, has received calls for assistance from all emirates in the UAE, said Ahmad Ebrahim Al Tartoor, director of Protection of Children’s Rights Administration at Sharjah Social Services Department.

Among the cases received was the case of an Asian boy who was allegedly beaten with electric cables by his father for not doing his homework. The case was reported by a friend of the boy’s mother.

Another boy was allegedly tortured by his father after being made to sit in an “electric chair”. His wife reported the matter after she saw sores and bruises on her son’s body.

The centre’s 800700 helpline also received a report about a mother who threw her daughter out in the street. The crisis intervention team arrived at the scene and took the girl. They contacted her parents and offered counselling and guidance services after they signed an undertaking.
