Maid arrested for aborting baby in sponsor's house

Fujairah: Police from the emirate have arrested an African maid who aborted her baby at her sponsor's house in Al Qariyah, an official told Gulf News yesterday.

According to the official, the sponsor discovered this on Thursday evening and called the police immediately.

The official said the maid, who was taken to the hospital, is in her 30s.

She was found by the sponsor's family on the toilet floor, screaming with pain.

Her sponsor found traces of blood and a newborn baby beside her on the ground.

The official said the maid told them she feared her pregnancy would be discovered.

She hid her condition and decided to abort the child herself.

The maid also told the official she had previously tried to abort the foetus in various ways, but failed.

She became pregnant after an illegitimate relationship, the official said.

A case has been registered against the maid. She will be questioned after she is discharged from hospital, the official said.
