Artist holds workshops in various forms of art and craft
Among the many forms of workshops available, art and craft are the favourite with most people. Rarely does one come across somebody who teaches all forms of art and craft.
Usha Thambi is one such multi-talented artist. She holds workshops in different mediums of painting.
Metal embossing and carving, thread, sand, bead and straw works, three-dimensional work, wire craft, decorative photo frames, gift boxes and greeting cards, flowermaking, stitching, embroidery, origami, soft toys and ceramic art are some of the crafts she teaches.
"I like to teach how to use waste material to create decorative pieces for the home," says Usha, a resident of Dubai for 19 years. Her workshops are held at Art Kid, Al Khaleej Centre, Bur Dubai, and also, privately at her home.
Of all the different kinds of craft she teaches, Ajanta art is the most distinctive and uncommon. Made with objects like stones and beads, it is a popular art form of Northern India.
"I have students of all ages; teenagers as well as adults. They are all keen to learn Ajanta art since it is unique and the materials used are easily available," says Usha.
Whenever people want to enroll for her workshop, Usha first shows them her work, to give them an idea of the art.
Most of what Usha teaches today is self-learnt. Although she did take classes to start with, over the years she developed what she had learnt into a multitude of art forms using her creativity and imagination.
Usha started with ceramic art and made a few pieces for her home and as gifts for friends. But she was not satisfied keeping the talent to herself. "I wanted to teach everybody around me."
What started as casual workshops have now become routine, with people enrolling mostly through word of mouth.
The fees charged are nominal and do not be surprised if this generous woman teaches you 12 different types of art even when you enroll for one. For, teaching and sharing has become a passion for this multi-talented artist.
