The latest venue in the European Senior Tour provided one of the closest finishes in both the $300,000 Abu Dhabi event as well as for the John Jacobs Trophy."There has been a misunderstanding between me and Juan Pablo Montoya," expressed Formula One racing car driver Ralf Schumacher at a press conference organised by Compaq at the Gitex yesterday.
"There has been a misunderstanding between me and Juan Pablo Montoya," expressed Formula One racing car driver Ralf Schumacher at a press conference organised by Compaq at the Gitex yesterday.
Schumacher, fast developing into a superstar in his own right, shed light on the current controversy surrounding the BMW Williams F1 team over the signing of CART racing ace Juan Pablo Montoya for next year's formula one season.
According to reports it is believed that Schumacher did not want Montoya in the team as a replacement for Jenson Button and he even expressed his views on it.
Montoya leaves CART after today's series season finale to join the formula one fraternity.
Speaking to agencies, Montoya said, "I don't know Ralf, so I don't have a problem with it. I don't think I'm going to Williams to...have a great relationship."
Addressing Montoya's statement Schumacher said, "All I said was that it would not be good to break the current team of Jenson Button and me. We make a good team. However, the decision to sign on Montoya has been taken by Frank (Williams). I do, however, feel that it will be tough for Juan to come in from CART racing to the world of F1."
Schumacher, who is visiting Dubai as a guest of both Compaq and BMW, made an appearance in the Compaq stall at the Dubai World Trade Centre. The younger brother of three time world champion Michael Schumacher also tried his hand at powerboat racing earlier in the morning by piloting a boat belonging to the Victory team at the DIMC in Mina Seyahi.
Being the brother of a three time ultra high profile world champion may, to some people, cause immense pressure. But this is not the case with Ralf.
"There is no pressure on me," he said. "I mean I am proud of what my brother has achieved and the fact that he has reached his goals. But I have enough to do for myself in any case. Therefore, no pressure. Why should I feel pressure?" he countered.
Having started his F3 career in 1995, Ralf served notice of his potential with a second place finish in the Monaco GP before going on to take victory in Macau.
He then commenced his F1 career in 1997. He had a third place win in Argentina finally claiming 11th place on the championship table.
Schumacher's first year with the Williams team saw him garner 35 points, good enough for sixth on the table. This year he managed fifth place in the F1 standings and a couple of very creditable finishes. However, he is willing to share some of the credit with the rapid strides made by F1 technology.
"I would say that the relationship is 70-30 in favour of technology," he said. "Ultimately, it's the human being who drives the car. But the bottom line is that we live through technology."
Expressing an interest for computers thanks to some enthusiastic questions 'planted' at him, Schumacher went a step forward in also expressing an avid interest in cars.
His favourite car? "BMW, but naturally," he countered to the obvious delight of all those who were wearing the BMW-Williams logo on their shirts.
"I mean it's a good car," explained Ralf. "The rest of the time I'm busy checking my shares in the financial pages."
