Friday Market opens in Dubai

2000 — A regular, weekly, traditional bazaar, which the authorities have been mulling over for some time, came alive with the opening of the ‘Friday Market’ alongside the Hamriya Shopping Centre in Dubai. The Market will run every Friday from 2.30pm up to midnight. A good number of UAE nationals, especially women, were displaying their collection of wares. The response for the market has been good. Nearly 400 slots had been earmarked for small outlets and kiosks in the open space alongside the Hamriya Shopping Centre. Khalifa Hareb, head of the Marketing Section at Dubai Municipality, said: “The initial response for the Friday Market is very good. We have received 800 applications for stalls.” Dubai Municipality officials said the weekly Friday Market would be run as an experiment for a few weeks. It will become a permanent feature if successful.
