Dubai: The UAE Ministry of Interior is using technology extensively in search and rescue operations. The ministry is represented by the headquarters of the Abu Dhabi Police.

During its 12th participation at the Gitex Exhibition, the ministry is unveiling new generations of modern electronic techniques as well as several initiatives and electronic services provided to the public.

At its Gitex stand on Tuesday, the ministry showed an interesting display of the same — showing how a digital camera mounted on a dog helps locate survivors under collapsed structures.

The wireless camera transmits images to the mobile screen of its handler who can quickly zero in on the trapped victims, enabling swift rescue, ministry officials explained.

“These dogs have a very keen sense of smell and they can reach places where their handlers cannot and search through rubble for survivors after a disaster. Through this wireless camera, they can record pictures and sound of the survivors and transmit it automatically up to 80 metres away through a device which is provided to the rescue team,” Lt. Colonel Faisal Al Shamari from the Abu Dhabi Police said.

Abu Dhabi Search and Rescue K-9 has a big team and has participated in search and rescue operations in Pakistan, Indonesia, Afghanistan and Iran.

Al Shamari added that the role played by the Ministry of Interior in maintaining security has contributed to stability in the UAE society.
