Nisipeanu defeated Grandmaster Gelashvili Tamaz of Georgia in 49 moves in a Sicilian defence Alapin variation. The players exchanged the Queens early in the opening and in the complex endgame, Nisipeanu won a pawn and maintained his slight edge throughout the game. The rest was routine technique.
