Dubai: India's Karun Chandhok became the first-ever driver to win the Asian Formula Renault V6 series with three dominant victories last weekend.

The result left the Indian with 131 points, 24 ahead of Team New Zealand's A1 Grand Prix lead driver Matt Halliday and Ananda Mikola in third with 98 points. Last Friday, Chandhok was fastest in every practice session as well as in all the four qualifying segments.

Extra points

Halliday though came very near to ruining Chandhok's perfect run in the final qualifying session, but ended up just 0.024 seconds behind the Indian.

"It's really great to have a double pole. What's even better for the Championship is that Ananda is down in 5th and with the two extra points for pole, things are looking better for the Championship."

In the first qualifying, Chandhok smashed the Zhuhai track record set by Christophe Bouchut of France in an Aston Martin GT car by 0.63 of a second.

Rounds 9 and 10 of the series were held on Saturday over 12 and 20 laps respectively, while Rounds 11 and 12 were held on Sunday over the same distances. Chandhok, sponsored by JK Tyre, Scottish and Newcastle and Amaron, won seven races during the season for the E-Rain Racing team.

"I came into this series to win and use it as a platform to move on to the World Series in Europe or the Champcar Atlantic Series in America," he stated.
