Sergio Garcia hoping for more Spanish success in Dubai

Dubai: Sergio Garcia is hoping to add his name to a long list of Spanish champions at the Omega Dubai Desert Classic this week.

Five Spaniards – more than any other nationality - have etched their name on the Coffee Pot including; Seve Ballesteros, Jose Maria Olazabal, Miguel Angel Jimenez, Alvaro Quiros and Rafael Cabrera-Bello.

But while Garcia can’t think why the Emirati sun shines so fondly on the Iberians, he’s hoping to benefit from the phenomena this week. “I think for some reason, it’s just one of those things that happens,” said Garcia, who has recorded 27 wins since turning professional in 1999, including last year’s Qatar Masters. “We’ve had five Spanish winners and it would be nice to make it six this week. So we’ll try and make sure that it [the Majlis Course] also fits my game, too.

“I feel like on this course, I’ve done well. But I probably haven’t got out of it as much as I should have. I felt like I’ve been up there several times and I’ve played fairly well, but unfortunately things have not happened to me yet on this course. So, hopefully I’ll be able to change that this week and see if we can be up there on Sunday.

“Obviously it’s going to take a lot of work, there’s a great field this year, so it’s not going to be easy. It’s going to take a lot of patience, a lot of good golf and some good things to happen when you need them most, so we’ll see.”
