Portuguese midfielder's commitment to English Premier League club reason for decision
Dubai: Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has rejected a mammoth offer from Saudi club Al Hilal to stay in Europe, according to reliable reports. The Portuguese midfielder was reportedly offered £700,000 per week in salary.
Transfer guru Fabrizio Romano said: “Bruno Fernandes has rejected Al Hilal’s proposal. Despite a crazy contract proposal from the Saudi Pro League club, Bruno Fernandes wants to continue playing football in Europe. The Man United captain wants to play at the top level in Europe. Decision made.”
Gulf News verdict: We were expecting a similar outcome and gave a verdict in our Transfer Talks column earlier this week when the rumour broke out. This is a big blow for Al Hilal, who were trying to sign him before the Club World Cup. They are definitely after a superstar signing, and we are eager to know who they will turn their attention to next. Bruno is only 30, and he would love to keep fighting at the elite level in Europe.
Though Fabrizio’s report hasn’t specifically mentioned whether he is definitely staying at United, another journalist, Ben Jacobs, quoted Fabrizio and stated that “Bruno Fernandes has decided to stay at Manchester United despite a massive offer from Al Hilal. Parties held positive talks last week, but Fernandes then deliberated with his family and has opted against the move. Hilal have already informed him.”
This decision shows he has carefully considered his family’s interests while demonstrating unwavering loyalty to Manchester United. Despite the club being at their lowest point, he is showing commitment when he could easily have selected his options. It’s not just Al Hilal, other European clubs competing in Champions League will be interested in his signature. The midfielder has consistently given his all for Manchester United throughout this difficult period and remains their best player both in and out of possession. Retaining him will be a major victory for the club in this transfer window.
Manchester United captain, after the Europa League final loss to Tottenham Hotspur in Bilbao, has offered to leave Manchester United if the club need to cash in on him in order to rebuild for the future.
“I have always been honest. I’ve always said I will be here until the club says to me that it’s time to go,” said Fernandes, 30.
“I’m eager to do more, to be able to bring the club to the great days. On the day that the club thinks that I’m too much or it’s time to part ways, football is like this, you never know it.”
