Port of Spain, Trinidad: As Pakistan struggles to come to terms with the death of their cricket team coach Bob Woolmer, speculation is rife over the cause of his death.
Woolmer had failed to show up the morning after their match with Ireland, some World Cup officials said. When they informed the hotel management, they opened the room to find Woolmer lying unconscious on the floor with blood and vomit all around him as well as on the walls.
Though Woolmer was rushed to the hospital, he was pronounced dead.
A statement from the High Command of the Jamaica Constabulary Force said: "The cause of death has not yet been established but will be determined after a postmortem examination."
Condolences
There was also some talk among the media who had gathered at the hospital that Woolmer had committed suicide. According to information, Woolmer was diabetic and lately had been experiencing difficulties breathing.
Russell Woolmer, his son who is in South Africa, has stated that stress may have caused the coach's death. "There was a lot of stress in his job and that may be the reason. I am extremely shocked." It is understood that after the match, he did not talk to anyone but went to his room.
Pakistan team media manager Pervez Mir said: "The boys are terribly disturbed. We are due to play Zimbabwe and we will play the match."
Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf and Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz sent condolence messages to Woolmer's family.
Inzamam to quit one-day cricket
Inzamam Ul Haq will quit one-day cricket and stand down as captain after the World Cup, citing Pakistan's first-round exit and the sudden death of coach Bob Woolmer as his main reasons.
The 37-year-old batsman said the upcoming match against Zimbabwe will be his last one-day international, although he plans to keep playing test cricket.
"I apologise to the people of Pakistan because I disappointed them," Inzamam said, speaking in Urdu on Sunday.
