IPL 2025: Ravichandran Ashwin pulls plug on Chennai Super Kings content amid backlash

Dubai: Dubai: Ravichandran Ashwin has always prided himself on being a step ahead. Whether it was launching a YouTube channel while still playing international cricket or outwitting batters with chess-like precision, the off-spinner has rarely been caught off guard.

But this time, Ashwin may have overplayed his hand. The 38-year-old has announced he will no longer cover Chennai Super Kings matches on his YouTube channel — a move prompted by backlash over recent comments made on the platform about team selection.

Steps back after selection row

Ashwin, who is part of the CSK squad in IPL Season 18, came under scrutiny after criticism was levelled at the team management for picking Noor Ahmad over Ravindra Jadeja and Ashwin himself. The discussion, which unfolded on his show, gained traction and eventually reached the team camp.

In response, Ashwin announced a temporary halt to all CSK-specific content on his channel.

“Given the nature of the discussions on this forum over the last week, we want to be mindful of how things can be interpreted and have chosen to step away from covering CSK games, both previews and reviews, for the rest of this season,” he said in a post.

'Guests’ views aren’t my own'

He also distanced himself from the views of panellists, reiterating that the integrity of the platform remains intact.

“We value the diversity of perspectives that come through on our shows and remain committed to ensuring the conversation stays true to the integrity and purpose of the platform we’ve established. The views expressed by our guests do not reflect Ashwin’s personal opinions,” he said.

“Looking forward to witnessing the rest of this exciting IPL season with all of you,” he added.

Ashwin retired from international cricket midway through the India-Australia series — a decision that drew criticism from Indian legend Kapil Dev, who felt the all-rounder could have handled it better. He returned to Chennai Super Kings after a nine-year gap but hasn’t had the best time this season, managing just three wickets in four matches.

Fleming: Didn’t even know he had a channel

The issue came into sharper focus during a post-match press conference on April 5, when CSK head coach Stephen Fleming was asked about the comments made on his channel.

“Mate, I have no idea. I didn’t even know he had a channel, so I don’t follow that stuff. That’s irrelevant. You guys are important,” Fleming replied with a smile.

On one of the rare occasions, Ashwin may have found himself a move behind — but he’ll likely be more watchful the next time he moves his pieces forward this IPL season.
