British boxer can’t wait to gorge after Rio

Rio de Janeiro: Britain’s Olympic medal contender Savannah Marshall got her Rio Games off to a winning start on Sunday and then said she was desperate for a cheeseburger — or four.

The 25-year-old middleweight, who admitted she had been suffering nerves, has waited impatiently to make her Games debut and said there had been some agonising moments while at the Olympic village trying to keep in tip-top condition.

“It’s horrible knowing that people are collecting medals while I’ve just had my first bout, it’s weird,” she said after beating Anna Laurell, 36, from Sweden.

“My flat’s right outside McDonald’s and every day I look outside and think, ‘Ah, one more week and I’ll be in that queue.’”

Asked what her first post-Olympics feast might be, Marshall — reckoned to be a threat to reigning Olympic champion Claressa Shields — said: “I’m going to get four cheeseburgers, take the buns away and have four meat buns. I’ve planned it all.”
