Modi, Virat Kohli congratulate Indian cricket team on Gabba victory: Youngsters first to breach 'Fortress Gabba' in 32 years

India have just beaten Australia in Brisbane in a historic game of cricket. Since 1988, Australia have been unbeaten at The Gabba in Brisbane.

The last team to beat the Aussies were the West Indies, led by Viv Richards in 1988. He tweeted: “You don't just play & love Test cricket for nothing. Brilliant game."

Stand-in skipper Ajinkya Rahane was a huge reason for India’s win, stepping in after the first Test for usual captain Virat Kohli, who left the series to go on paternity leave for the birth of his first child with actress Anushka Sharma. Victory in Brisbane meant India claimed the four-Test series 2-1, and kept the Border-Gavaskar trophy.

The resilience this young, largely inexperienced and injury-hit Indian team showed was fantastic - and the wishes poured in for Team India.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted within minutes of India's triumph that the country was “overjoyed”. "We are all overjoyed at the success of the Indian Cricket Team in Australia," he tweeted. "Their remarkable energy and passion was visible throughout. So was their stellar intent, remarkable grit and determination. Congratulations to the team! Best wishes for your future endeavours.’’

Sourav Ganguly, the head of India's cricket board (BCCI), said the achievement was nothing short of historic. He tweeted a special bonus for the team of 50 million rupees ($680,000): ''Just a remarkable win ... To go to Australia and win a Test series in this way will be remembered in the history of Indian cricket forever. The BCCI announces a 5 cr bonus for the team. The value of this win is beyond any number. Well done to every member of the touring party."

Virat Kohli, India's captain in the first Test in Adelaide — when the team were skittled for a lowerst-ever 36 — tweeted: "WHAT A WIN!!! Yessssss. To everyone who doubted us after Adelaide, stand up and take notice. Exemplary performance but the grit and determination was the standout for us the whole way. Well done to all the boys and the management. Enjoy this historic feat lads. Cheers."

Cricketing legend Sachin Tendulkar described it as “one of the greatest series wins”. "Every sessikon we discovered a new hero. Every time we got hit, we stayed put & stood taller. We pushed boundaries of belief to play fearless but not careless cricket. Injuries & uncertainties were countered with poise & confidence."

"Historic win!!! What an effort!!! So proud," said Bollywood star Ranveer Singh.

Dubbing India's Gabba win as the greatest ever, Google CEO Sundar Pichai also congratulated India and tweeted: ''One of the greatest Test series wins ever. Congrats India and well played Australia, what a series #INDvsAUS."

India fast bowler Ishant Sharma wrote: "Team India has proved it again by team efforts, great character, courage & max determination! Despite the bruises, the team made it possible for our country. That's why we play for the country's flag to go high every time we perform."
