Look! Cristiano Ronaldo breaks men's international goal scoring record

Record breaker! Cristiano Ronaldo broke the world record for goals scored in men's international football as he scored his 110th and 111th goals for Portugal in their 2-1 World Cup qualifying victory against the Republic of Ireland. He actually could have had 112 but saw his penalty kick saved denying him a hat-trick.

Rising high... The 36-year-old attacker who has just re-signed for former club Man Utd scored two late headers to break and extend the record after seeing the penalty saved by Gavin Bazunu.

On the ball... The record had been held by Iran striker Ali Daei who scored 109 goals between 1993 and 2006. Ronaldo had equalled that record with a double against France at Euro 2020. Now, he has broken it.

A load lifted... The record had been on the superstar's mind during Euro 2020 - where he performed admirably scoring five goals to win the Golden Boot award - and there was never any doubt that he would go on to break it.

Ronaldo, who rejoined United from Juventus on deadline day, and Daei are the only two male players to score 90 or more international goals.

He said, "I'm so happy, not only because I beat the record, but for the special moment that we had. Two goals at the end of the game. I have to appreciate what the team did, we believed until the end. I'm so glad."

All-time great... This is the latest landmark to push the argument for the Portuguese to be considered an all-time great. He is already the top scorer in club football's top tournament, the European Cup/Champions League, a trophy he has won five times.

91 of his 111 international goals for Portugal have been inside the box with 20 from outside. He has scored 14 penalties and nine free-kicks.
