It is felt that this year is expected to be the year of uncertainty for the large expatriate community residing in the Gulf countries. It is a matter of lifestyle choices for a section of the community. However, when a large number of people around the world continue to suffer due to natural calamities, conflicts, diseases and the like, we certainly must change our priorities to address what deserves our full attention.

Last year was extremely distressing for millions of people from various conflict-raged countries in the Middle East, who were and still are forced to travel to Europe and elsewhere for the sake of their survival. They have been separated from their families and are referred to as ‘migrants’ or ‘refugees’ due to the endless conflicts in their homeland. However, they are yet to find a safe place to call ‘home’ for the rest of their lives.

Similarly, while the fall in oil prices is expected to tighten the privileges of normal life for many, the agony of the millions of refugees, including women and children are conveniently ignored. This just reflects the two sides of the need for survival in this new era of disparity and conflicts.

As the fluctuation in oil prices is making it difficult for trade and business practices to stay active, it is only a matter of time before it starts affecting the retail market and the common man.

As various studies suggest, it is high time that we look into alternatives in life, By doing so, we would streamline the way life goes, thus not only helping societies survive, but also preserving nature and its valuable resources. However, before we go on to look at the future, it is vital that we go back to review the root cause for the fall in oil prices.
