The ban on the Islamic burkini swimsuit on some French beaches has triggered disdain on social media channels.

A village mayor in Corsica banned full-body swimsuits known as “burkinis” after a beach brawl between families of North African descent and local youths.

Sisco Mayor Ange-Pierre Vivoni was adamant his decision was “nothing to do with racism, it’s about protecting people’s security”. According to AFP Vivoni said: “I am absolutely not racist. I want to protect the population, notably my area’s Muslim population because I think that they are the main victims of these extremist provocations.”

@joycetreasure: “#Burquini ban is hypocritical to the max. Women have a right to wear whatever they wish.”

@mamaduck9370: “I’m non-Muslim but have considered buying a burquini because I have lipoedema & I want to cover my legs. Ban is ludicrous.”

Jawaid Rasheed Siddiqui: “France’s ban on Burqini is just like Iran’s ban on Bikini: A patriarchal mindset that believes women can’t decide for themselves.”

Aida Linn Villegas: “I would wear this! Be able to go tho the beach and not get burnt!”
