Issue is being fixed
In response to the complaint in a Gulf News’ Community Report, the Road Maintenance Department will take immediate action and do temporary asphalt on the said carriageway and the road works for the whole project will be completed by July 2012 (‘Treacherous bend at Al Quoz’, Gulf News, May 20).

Problem solved
I would like to thank Gulf News for publishing my Community Report (‘Treacherous bend at Al Quoz’, Gulf News, May 20). To my surprise one of the engineers in the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) contacted me and wanted to check about the complaint. It was not a complaint, though, but a report published in a way for the authorities to make the roads safer. I emailed the engineer with the report. I am quite impressed with the effect this report has had. When I was travelling on this road the other day I was amazed to see that the pothole is covered. It’s now safe for motorists to drive. I would like to thank Gulf News and the RTA for taking this report into consideration.

Got it back
I would like to thank Dubai Police for returning my pouch during my recent visit to Dubai International Airport. I had gone to pick up my daughter and grand daughter at the airport when I misplaced my pouch, which contained my mobile phone and wallet full of cash and important cards such as the Emirates ID and driving license. When I realised that my pouch was missing, we rang my phone number and the police picked up saying they had found my pouch. I went to the lost and found section and the police officer politely returned my pouch.

Rubbish everywhere
As I walked down Jumeirah Beach the other morning I was appalled and dismayed by the amount of rubbish I saw – empty cartons, water bottles and countless plastic bags and gloves. The beach is one of Dubai’s treasures, a magnet for residents and tourists alike. I fear that without proper maintenance or cleaning, the beach’s reputation will be damaged and this treasure will be lost. I suggest that beachfront hotels and the local authorities be asked to instigate an early morning rubbish removal scheme, similar to that provided by many of the world’s most beautiful beaches.

Gross habit
I would like to bring to the attention of the authorities to please tackle the problem of spitting. This has been a total embarrassment to this beautiful emirate of Dubai and the visitors seeing this disgusting habit. We seek urgent attention from the civic authorities or police to look into this matter.

The power of no TV
I fully agree with Gulf News reader Zara that television and violent computer games are responsible for bullying in schools. (‘It’s all because of TV’, Gulf News, May 25) I have been a student in Dubai for the past seven years (since grade one). My family does not have a satellite television connection. I am able to play more games with friends and spend more time with my family, not to forget that it gives me ample time to read and listen to music, too.

Great example
Seeing these plants is an inspiration. Against all odds they are surviving – be it alone or in uncongenial surroundings or conditions. Some of them even provide shade and shelter for others. They soothe others with their presence. Shouldn’t we follow their noble example?

Make it fun
Learning English is completely different from how it used to be (‘Schools open a new page in teaching children English’, Gulf News, May 26). Students should be given specific programmes to enhance their abilities. The annual plans and lesson plans should be studied carefully. I think the mentioned programme is useful and it helps in learning English. Children of today don’t accept any material if they don’t find it fun. The instructors should do their best to make the students love the subject and break the normal routine.
