It’s all eyes on shoulders at the Cannes Film Festival, with red-carpet stars ditching cleavage in favour of accentuating the upper torso and shoulders — through embellishments or bare skin.
One of the best shoulder looks was comeback kid Sienna Miller who shone in a speckled gray Balenciaga off-the-shoulder dress from Fall 2015 with a band that accentuated her enviable upper torso.
Chinese actress Fan Bingbing showcased the cold-shouldered look twice at the festival: On opening night in one the best looks at the event yet, a regal pastel Ralph and Russo couture; and at the Chopard party in a sweet white cocktail dress by the same designer.
But it’s not just red carpet couture stars that can access the look: Off-the-shoulder, both casual and formal, is set to be one of the summer’s defining looks.
And with the design found everywhere from flouncy gypsy blouses and sundresses to cropped tops, jumpsuits and cocktail dresses, at every price point, there’s a way for everyone to incorporate a bit of Cannes style into their look this weekend. (Note: Heels not obligatory.)
The secret for shoulders is: Toned, but not too skinny!
We caught up with Buffi Jashanmal, a FlyBarre instructor and personal trainer (and co-author of new health and fitness website theryelife.com) to share her tips for tackling and toning the shoulder area. Hey, what else are you going to be doing this Friday morning?
“You don’t want to just work one muscle group,” she says. “Most of these moves combine some of the back, especially with pushes in front, in that stance you are going to be using your back, as well. If you are working those top muscles you want to work the underneath of your arms as well.”
And don’t forget your cardio: “You definitely need to increase cardio in your workout. This is a good little routine you can do in the morning if you don’t have enough time [for a full workout]. When it comes to reps “you always want to be exhausted. Do between 10-15, and the last three should be the most challenging”.
The moves are also great for some last-minute definition. “Say you’ve got a photoshoot or an event, it does get the blood pumping to those muscles so you can do it immediately before something.”
