Every human being has a different idea of balance and it can get confusing on what perfect balance is. As each and every person is unique, so is their balance. Rather than looking at what perfect balance is, look at what balances you within your lifestyle.
A common question asked in a yoga class is: “how can I do the postures with a lot more ease on one side as compared to the other?” The answer is simple — that the balance in the mind and body are yet to be found.
In yogic philosophy, we believe that balance can be achieved with good use of effort and rest and an understanding that extremes lead to death and balance leads to health. Apply this to life as well, it will make life more wholesome.
Continuing our series, let us look at santolanasana and how it can aid in achieving balance.
Note: Though these postures are easy to do and can be done by all at home, as with all exercise, it’s advisable to consult a doctor before starting them.
Santolasana
Santolana means balance and this is applied to all postures that require balancing in them. There are various versions of the posture. Here is the basic version of santolanasana.
Procedure:
1. Stand with your feet together and arms by your side
2. Raise your right arm up and place it close to your ear
3. Now hold your left leg with your left hand and try balancing your body on one leg.
4. Once you are balanced, pull your left leg as close to your body and hold the posture from 10-30 seconds.
5. Repeat the same on the other side.
Benefits:
1. This posture improves nervous balance helping in achieving inner equilibrium and harmony.
2. It strengthens the muscles of the legs and spine, improving coordination between them .
Caution: persons suffering from vertigo problem should practice balancing postures under professional guidance.
