While fashion weeks and red carpets hold sway, high streets and fashion stores are pushing the "it" item - the jumpsuit, playsuit, also known as all-in-one - for Spring/Summer 2009. The spring runways were as shimmering and vibrant as a Moroccan souq under an Arabian night sky showcasing beautiful silk jumpsuits and playsuits.
Originally designed for skydiving, it has re-entered the fashion world thanks to Alexander McQueen, Stella McCartney, YSL and a handful of other designers who sent all-in-ones in various silhouettes, shapes, fabrics and colours down the runway. A-list celebs like Rihanna, Eva Longoria Parker, Alicia Keys and Mary-Kate Olsen have flaunted the jumpsuit on the red carpet. Well, who needs a pretty dress when you can shine and feel good in this headline grabbing star trend? However, wearing a jumpsuit is a bit tricky; so take a look at the following guidelines to get you started.
Shape
The key to this trend is finding the right shape for your figure - not too baggy nor too tight. Opt for a size bigger than the usual to ensure a more flattering fit. Height Height is also an important consideration. If you are on the shorter side, consider a cropped length all-in-one.
Evening glamour
If you want something more fashion-forward, you might like a silk or jersey full-length halter neck playsuit. Carry a bright patent clutch for a modern, playful (but still grown up) edge for some trendy evening glamour.
Heels
When it comes to accessorising, heels are essential. They will add length to your legs and elongate your silhouette.
Weekend wear
To stroll around the city on a warm weekend, wear a neutral soft linen playsuit teamed up with a white vest top, sunglasses, Grecian sandals and silver accessories to keep the look pretty simple and clean. If you have never been a fan of an all-in-one, it may be time to change your mind!
Fact sheet
A technical note on the difference between a 'playsuit' and a 'jumpsuit': a 'playsuit' is short, whereas a 'jumpsuit' is full-length and usually worn by skydivers. Starting in the 1960s, the jumpsuit has made occasional appearances in common and high fashion (particularly in the 1980s), but has never been a common item of everyday wear.
