Don't get misguided by this picture of roses. It ain't Valentine's Day. Yet. But then do you really need an occasion to gift your beloved a rose?
A red rose is more than just a symbol of love. Presenting it can be therapeutic - for the giver and receiver. "Many expats in the UAE are away from their families and loved ones and receiving a red rose can lift their spirits.
There is something magical about them. Gift even one stem to someone who is feeling low or depressed and see the difference instantly," suggests florist Nidal Anwar Shawish of Queen Palace Roastery and Flowers.
Shawish says it is men who usually buy roses. "A red rose can speak volumes about a person's thoughts and feelings and is perhaps one of the best gift options available," he adds. "They are also pretty affordable (Dh5 per stem)."
Interestingly, while it is the red, white, yellow and pink roses that are most sought after, there are a few who opt for black roses. "Yes there are times when some people come looking for black roses," he says.
If you have received a bouquet of roses and they have begun to wither, "take the bunch of flowers and dry them well in the sun.
"It may take a couple of days, maybe weeks to do so, but once the flowers are thoroughly dried, you will get a box full of potpourri!"
