However, the state that often follows a good soak and scrub is energy. Bathrooms are now important spaces for revitalising and energising the mind, body and soul.

Call it chi, call it chakras, there is a core energy in all of us that needs to be awakened. This section gives us some options for creating a space that is cleansing and uplifting.

Costly as they may be, some modern gizmos and bathroom gadgets can be incredibly good at replenishing and awakening. The better the technology available in your bathroom, the better the experience. A good showerhead could easily uplift the soul. Powerful massage jets in whirlpool baths are an effective way to get rid of stress and the effervescence fills you with tingling energy bubbles.

Chromatherapy is one such technology that, when introduced into your daily bath routine, completely enhances this simple ritual. Using different spectrums of light, it relaxes and rejuvenates the body. The method has been snapped up by lead designers and integrated into some of the most luxurious bathtubs.

Rainshowers are particularly invigorating, because they emulate the sensation of natural rain. Some of the high-end ones are pricey but incredibly effective. Other options include a row of shower heads installed in the wall with powerful jets for an overall rejuvenating experience. Now if that doesn’t wake you up, not much will.

Splashing out the big bucks for the latest toys is one way to go. Alternatively, those with a tighter pocket and a DIY attitude could opt for more cost-effective tactics. Playing with colour is one.

Deeper, darker or brighter tones awaken the body and spirit and simultaneously form a nice canvas highlighting beautiful fittings. The trend for tiny, colourful mosaic tiles entered the market several years ago and still remains. When applied on the walls, the range of tones from darkest to lightest form a sea of shades, perfectly offsetting the clean and very deliberate lines of products such as Bagno’s Alessi range.

Moving to a more holistic tactic, oils, incense and the right salts can be an easy pick-me-up.

And don’t forget to accessorise. Add zip to the space with colourful book shelves, bright towels and rugs, and the odd design piece of furniture that simply makes you happy. And of course, ample space for a bit of song and dance.
Starting the day with Eye of the Tiger may sound lame to some, but the inner star in you will be rearing to go and take on the world.
