Andrew Humphries: hotel general manager

Andrew, you are managing the only hotel in the world that overlooks a Grand Prix racetrack. What does that entail on a day-to-day basis?. My role differs every day and is hugely varied – that’s why I love it. But my main priority is to make sure the hotel is running to its optimum capacity and that all guests are satisfied with their stay. My tasks encompass a mix of leadership, support for the team, client entertainment, admin, meetings and, of course, travel. . So, what makes a truly outstanding hotel?. Well, for us, our location on Yas Island is pretty outstanding. It allows guests to explore the many nearby attractions including Yas Mall, Yas Waterworld and Ferrari World, and it’s right on the doorstep of Abu Dhabi as well. Then there’s the hotel design. It’s totally unique. We have a light grid shell that is made of 4,898 diamond-shaped glass panels. These illuminate in the evening and can be programmed for events throughout the year, making it a pretty unique UAE landmark. And, of course, the property sits at the heart of the F1 racetrack where guests can be front row and centre at the Grand Prix. . What’s the best part of the job? And the worst?. One that I value is my position to teach and help others grow: it’s a great feeling when someone joins the company and works their way up to a senior position, and to know that the hotel has been instrumental in that personal growth. I also get huge satisfaction from ensuring the look and feel of the hotel – from music to lighting, from the scent to the way the furniture is arranged – makes the very most of the space. The sheer variety keeps it constantly interesting. As for the worst, it is very demanding, but, to be honest, there is nothing else I’d rather do. . What’s it like in the build-up to the F1 race? And on the day itself?. F1 is peak season. Around 8,000 guests visit us and up to 35,000 meals are served each day over the weekend. We have an average of 78 Ferrari cars in our garage, and we get booked for 500 spa treatments. As you can imagine, the build-up is extremely busy but the weekend itself is great fun – the atmosphere can’t be matched and I love the buzz. I always need a holiday afterwards to recover though.. It is also renowned for its great parties…. Last year we had very successful parties in Skylite with an average of 1,500 guests attending every night. Rich List, the popular promoters, took over Rush, where we had around 2,000 guests during the weekend, and witnessed the singer Tyrese performing live. This year, Rich List will be collaborating with Cirque le Soir to bring an extra entertainment element to the F1 weekend.. Have you driven on the course?. No, but I’ve cycled it and ran it! . What advice would you give to someone who wants to be a hotel manager?. Flexibility is very important. Other key skills involve good leadership, decisiveness, and the ability to adapt to different situations, people and places. Plus, a great sense of humour!
