Kunal is no stranger to controversy—his routines often take aim at political establishment
Comedian Kunal Kamra is once again in the spotlight—this time for a satirical jab aimed at Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. Known for blending humour with political critique, Kamra sparked a firestorm after calling Shinde a "gaddar" (traitor) during a recent stand-up performance. What began as a punchline has now escalated into police complaints, political threats, and vandalism—placing Kamra at the centre of yet another heated debate on freedom of expression in India. Here's a break-down of the controversy:
Kunal Kamra is a well-known Indian stand-up comedian and satirist, popular for his bold political commentary. He’s no stranger to controversy—his routines often take aim at the country’s political establishment, and he’s previously made headlines for a mid-air confrontation with news anchor Arnab Goswami in 2020.
During a recent stand-up show, Kamra performed a spoof of a popular Hindi song, where he cheekily referred to Maharashtra’s Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde as a “gaddar” (traitor). The jab was a reference to Shinde’s 2022 political rebellion, which led to a split in the Shiv Sena party.
Kamra sang, “Meri nazar se tum dekho to gaddar nazar wo aaye, haaye,” parodying a song from Dil To Pagal Hai. The clip was shared on social media and quickly went viral, catching the attention of political supporters.
The Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena faction didn’t take the joke lightly. Shiv Sena MLA Murji Patel filed a police complaint, demanding Kamra’s arrest and a public apology. He warned that if Kamra didn't apologise within two days, he would face protests and wouldn't be allowed to “move freely” in Mumbai.
In a show of protest, Shiv Sena supporters vandalised the Habitat Studio in Mumbai, where Kamra had performed. This led to the police booking over 40 Sena workers for property damage and unlawful assembly.
While some leaders from the Shinde faction have warned Kamra to leave the country, others came to his defense. Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut sarcastically praised Kamra’s wordplay by posting, “Kunal Ka Kamal”. Aaditya Thackeray also condemned the vandalism, calling it a cowardly act and taking a swipe at Shinde using the nickname “Mindhe,” a Marathi word suggesting subservience.
No. In 2020, Kamra was temporarily banned by multiple airlines after confronting Arnab Goswami on an IndiGo flight. That incident sparked a fierce debate on the boundaries of public protest and freedom of speech in India.
