Weekend watchlist: 10 TV shows and movies to check out

‘No Time to Die’ (UAE cinemas): Fans of the most famous movie spy in the world are in for a treat. The new James Bond film is here, and it’s Daniel Craig’s last outing as 007. In the latest flick, Bond is recruited to rescue a kidnapped scientist and ends up on the trail of a mysterious villain armed with dangerous new technology.

‘Dune’ (UAE cinemas): This masterpiece is still in cinemas, so if you haven’t checked it out or want a repeat viewing, here’s your reminder. This epic film, based on the books by Frank Herbert, tells the story about a gifted young man named Paul Atreides who has to travel to the most dangerous planet in the universe to ensure the future of his family and his people.

‘Don’t Breathe 2’ (UAE cinemas): The first ‘Don’t Breathe’ that released in 2016 was an exhilarating and unique film about a blind man who has to protect himself when his house in broken into. In the sequel set years after the deadly home invasion, Norman Nordstrom (Stephen Lang) has been living a quiet life with a young girl, until criminals kidnaps her. Now, he has to save her no matter what.

‘Britney Vs Spears’ (Netflix): This is one of the many documentaries made about the pop star that we all know and love, Britney Spears. This film takes viewers into her life and her public and private search for freedom. Directed by Erin Lee Carr, it features investigative work, exclusive interviews and new documents.

‘Laakhon Mein Ek Season 2’ (Amazon Prime Video): Created by comedian Biswa Kalyan Rath, this anthology series showcases the lives and struggles of ordinary people faced with extraordinary circumstances. In season 2, Dr Shreya (Shweta Tripathi) is posted in a village to conduct a cataract camp, however the villagers don’t have faith in government healthcare.

‘Squid Game’ (Netflix): This dark and twisted South Korean series has everyone talking, and might be Netflix’s most popular show to date. In it, 456 broke and desperate contestants compete in a deadly survival game to win a massive amount of money that can change their lives. Expect blood, gore and frustration and the contestants play strange version of childhood games to secure the winnings.

‘Black Mafia Family’ (Starzplay): Based on a true story, this series executive produced by 50 Cent is about two brothers who suffer from poverty and eventually rise through the ranks to create one of the most influential crime families in the US.

‘Castle’ (Starzplay): This weekend, escape into this classic crime TV show that was loved by many. It revolves around a popular mystery novelist Rick Castle who teams with NYPD Detective Kate Beckett to solve the case of a copycat killer who recreates murder scenes from Rick’s novels.

‘Blood & Water’ (Netflix): This show has two seasons so it’s a perfect binge-watch. The story takes place in Cape Town, where a teenager sets out to prove that a private-school swimming champion is her missing sister after meeting her at a party. Throughout the show you see her uncover her family’s secret past as she navigates the complicated world of a South African high school.

‘Dirty John’ (Netflix): This show, which is based on a popular true-crime podcast, tells the story of women who have had their lives ruined by shady men. The first season stars Connie Britton as an interior designer who falls for a con artist played by Eric Bana.
