Stephen Colbert’s show to air after Super Bowl

The Late Show with Stephen Colbert is about to get the Super Bowl bounce.

CBS announced on Wednesday that it will broadcast a live episode of the late-night show following Super Bowl 50 on February 7. According to the network, it’s the first time in history that a late-night show will air in the post-Super Bowl time slot.

Colbert will not be on site for the big game in Santa Clara, California. Instead, the episode will be broadcast from the Ed Sullivan Theatre in New York. It will be followed by a special edition of The Late Late Show with James Corden.

Traditionally, networks have used the post-Super Bowl berth to spotlight popular prime-time series. Recent Super Bowl lead-out programmes include The Blacklist on NBC in 2015 and New Girl on Fox in 2014. But CBS is shaking things up by using the Super Bowl to bring more eyeballs to its two newly launched late-night shows.

“We’re extremely proud of our two new late night franchises, and we’re thrilled to give Stephen and James this big Super Bowl Sunday showcase,” said CBS Entertainment president Glenn Geller.
