Abi Varghese, director of Malayalam sitcom Akkara Kazhchakal, narrates the story of an aspiring filmmaker in his feature film Monsoon Mangoes, shot in New Orleans and releasing in the UAE on February 18.

Fahad Faasil plays the lead role of DP Pallikkal, a young filmmaker in the US trying to make an ambitious film with very limited funds and talent.

“It’s about dreamers who are trying to make something out of themselves and fallen artists,” said Varghese, who manages a production house, Infamous Coconuts, in the US.

“As a self-proclaimed director, he is very optimistic but lacks something. Fahad is an amazing actor who can transform himself into any character given to him,’ he added.

Ishwarya Menon plays Rekha, the young man’s love interest. Vijay Raaz plays a washed-up actor.

“However, the film does not explore any love theme. It revolves around Fahad and Vijay Raaz.”

Varghese, a fan of the Coen brothers, Woody Allen and Sam Mendes, said, “We have tried to make the film look and feel different with its simple design and camera work.”
