Dubai: Bollywood actress Jacqueline Fernandez was one of seven remarkable women celebrated at the Women in Cinema Gala hosted by Saudi Arabia’s Red Sea International Film Festival during the 78th Cannes Film Festival.

The prestigious gala is an annual event that highlights the achievements of women who are shaping the future of global cinema.

This year’s edition spotlighted talent from across Asia, Africa, and the Arab world—recognising their contributions to storytelling, performance, and cultural innovation.

Representing India, Jacqueline was honoured for her growing international presence and her efforts to bridge cinematic cultures. Her selection not only marked a major career milestone but also reflected the increasing global recognition of Indian artists on platforms like Cannes.

Alongside her, six other dynamic women were recognised:

  • Rungano Nyoni (Zambia-Wales), known for her acclaimed film I Am Not a Witch

  • Amina Khalil (Egypt), a leading voice in modern Egyptian film and television

  • Elham Ali (Saudi Arabia), celebrated for her impact on regional screen narratives

  • Engfa Waraha (Thailand), a rising star in Southeast Asian entertainment

  • Gaya Jiji (Syria), a filmmaker known for her nuanced depictions of Syrian life

  • Sarah Taiba (Saudi Arabia), an artist and director exploring identity and heritage through film

Established in 2022, the Women in Cinema Gala has become a key feature of Cannes, serving as a platform to honour female trailblazers from diverse regions and industries. Past honorees have included Indian star Kiara Advani, French-Senegalese filmmaker Ramata Toulaye-Sy, and Saudi actress Adhwa Fahad.
