Local distributors say the controversial political thriller has raked in over $9million
Dubai: Mohanlal’s political thriller L2: Empuraan is enjoying a stellar run at the UAE box office, raking in over $9.36 million according to local distributors.
The film, despite being saddled with controversies and legal scrutiny involving its producers, has struck gold commercially.
Directed by Prithviraj Sukumaran, the film’s appeal has extended far beyond the Gulf region.
Globally, L2: Empuraan has collected over Rs2.5 billion, making it the highest-grossing Malayalam film to date. Domestically, it has netted Rs1 billion in India alone, while overseas markets like North America have contributed handsomely, with collections exceeding $1.27 million within just a few days.
Its success comes in the wake of reported investigations by India’s Enforcement Directorate into alleged financial irregularities tied to the film’s production—controversies that appear to have done little to deter fans.
L2: Empuraan is a Malayalam-language action thriller that serves as a sequel to the 2019 film Lucifer. The story follows Stephen Nedumpally, portrayed by Mohanlal, who leads a double life as Khureshi Ab'raam, the enigmatic leader of a powerful global crime syndicate. The plot delves into his return to Kerala's tumultuous political landscape, where he confronts emerging threats and navigates complex alliances to protect his interests and those of his loved ones.
