"I love her and admire her," he told Women's Wear Daily. "I think she's a genius. She definitely has a real sense of fashion."

Gaultier however declined to reveal any details about what he was designing for Madonna, saying only that it would be seen on her and her dancers in a section of the concert.

The designer, who this week hosted his first fashion show in Beijing, China of his autumn women's and men's ready-to-wear and couture collections, is now at the Cannes International Film Festival where he is a member of the jury. He is the only non-film jury member.

Meanwhile, Madonna's one-of-a-kind Chanel handbag will be one of the items auctioned at the annual amfAR gala on the sidelines of the festival. The Cinema Against AIDS event on May 24 will feature a live auction and runway show to benefit the American Foundation for AIDS Research.

Past big-ticket auction items included a kiss from Twilight star Robert Pattinson and a dress right off Gwen Stefani's back. Stars Alec Baldwin, Janet Jackson and Kylie Minogue are headed to the South of France to co-chair the gala along with actress Milla Jovovich, designer Karl Lagerfeld, producer Harvey Weinstein, The Artist co-star Berenice Bejo and director Michel Hazanavicius, Bollywood actress Aishwarya Rai and amfAR chairman Kenneth Cole.
