Bangladeshis celebrate Victory Day

Abu Dhabi: The final verdict to punish the murderers of the Father of Bangladesh makes this year's Victory Day a significant one, Mohammad Nazmul Quanine, Bangladesh Ambassador, told Gulf News.

The ambassador was referring to the final verdict of the Supreme Court of Bangladesh upholding the High Court verdict confirming death sentences to 12 former military officers for the 1975 assassination of Bangladesh's founding father Shaikh Mujibur Rahman.

Bangladeshis in the capital celebrated Victory Day on Wednesday with colourful programmes at the Bangladesh Embassy. Bangladesh celebrates Victory Day on December 16 to mark the occasion of the country gaining independence after a nine-month war with Pakistan.

Mujibur Rahman, the then president, his wife, three sons and the wives of two of the sons were gunned down by a group of disgruntled army officers. Two daughters of Rahman — Shaikh Hasina and Shaikh Rehana — escaped the massacre as they were abroad.

Justice has been served which is very significant in the history of the nation, Quanine said.

The ambassador hoisted the national flag in the presence of more than hundred community members and pupils from the Bangladeshi School in Abu Dhabi. They prayed for the martyrs in the war and prosperity for the country.
