In pictures: Dimple Kapadia's stirring performances over the decades

Bobby (1973): Bollywood actress Dimple Kapadia has starred in many successful films in her five-decade career. She made her acting debut as a teenager in 'Bobby' (1973), a Hindi romantic drama starring Rishi Kapoor. Kapadia gained a great deal of popularity following the movie. 'Bobby's central theme was the love story between its lead actors, who come from different social backgrounds. It became a major hit as people loved the chemistry between its lead pair.

Saagar (1985): Rishi Kapoor, Kamal Haasan and Dimple Kapadia star in this love triangle which turned out to be successful at the box office. Kapadia as Mona D'Silva, who runs a small restaurant, was appreciated for her role. The movie was also remembered for its music.

Rudaali (1993): Another milestone in the seasoned actress' career. Kapadia excelled in her portrayal of Shanichari, a professional weeper from rural Rajasthan who had lost touch with her own feelings. The artistic drama was among India's official entries for Best Foreign Language Film at the 66th Academy Awards. She won the prestigious National Award and Filmfare Critics Award for Best Actress for one of her best performances of her career.

Krantiveer (1993): In this incredibly successful movie, Kapadia (seen here with her daughter Twinkle Khanna) makes an impact as a journalist who convinces a drunken, jobless villager to stand up for justice. She was honoured with a Filmfare Best Supporting Actress nomination. The second portion of her acting career would be substantially shaped by her ability to play great supporting roles.

Ram Lakhan (1989): Other key movies that Kapadia starred in included 'Ram Lakhan' and 'Batwara'. 'Ram Lakhan', a revenge drama, was a critical and commercial success.

Dil Chahta Hai (2001): Dimple Kapadia essayed the role of Tara Jaiswal in a movie that centred on friendship and love. The cross-generational love storyline between Kapadia and Akhsaye Khanna was a high point, with Kapadia giving a compelling performance as a woman who unexpectedly bonds with a much younger man.

Tenet (2020): Kapadia plays Priya Singh, an arms dealer based out of Mumbai, in Christopher Nolan's science fiction action thriller film headlined by John David Washington.

'Saas Bahu Aur Flamingo': In this web series set in a fictional state in India, Kapadia plays Savitri, who runs an empire smuggling contraband and other illegal substances. Critics praised her for her solid performance, saying she holds up the series.
