Højgaard to make last-ditch attempt to defend DP World Tour Championship title
The Dane is currently falling short of qualification into the season-ender in Dubai
Nicolai Højgaard, last year's DP World Tour Championship winner, is pulling out all the stops to defend his crown at Jumeirah Golf Estates.
The Danish star has set his sights on retaining the season-ending title and has confirmed his participation in the Genesis Championship, the season’s final regular event, as he looks to work his way up the Race to Dubai Rankings.
After securing a PGA Tour card through last year’s Race to Dubai, the 23-year-old has played predominantly on the American circuit this season, leaving him short of points on the season-long standings on golf’s global tour.
The three-time DP World Tour winner currently lies in 85th in the Race to Dubai, with only the top 50 securing their spot in the DP World Tour Championship in Dubai.
Højgaard will be hoping to secure his spot in both the final Rolex Series event of the season and the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship, which is open to the top 70 players on the standings, when he tees it up at the French Open this week.
But should he not make significant strides up the Rankings in France, he has opted to give himself one last opportunity by entering the Genesis Championship in South Korea at the end of October.
“I’m looking forward to coming back to Asia and playing in Korea for the first time,” he said.
“I’ve heard amazing things about the country and hopefully I can be in the mix come Sunday. It’s great to have these opportunities at an exciting time on the DP World Tour, with a lot to play for.”
Højgaard will be joined by the likes of former Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship winner Pablo Larrazábal and defending champion Sanghyun Park in South Korea.
