Today's Word Search: How to increase your future income by 10 per cent

For most people, their school years are probably the best years of their lives. If you put aside homework and exams, you are left with endless days of friends, good health, no responsibilities, aches or pains, and the privilege of learning new things every day.

But this is not the case for millions of people around the world. Many children in the developing world live in squalid conditions, and do not have the luxury of attending school when they could be put to work.

In 2012, there were 168 million child labour workers aged 5 to 17, according to Australia-based nonprofit organisation Global Citizen. Today, 59 million children of primary school age are being denied an education around the world. Children living in a rural environment are twice as likely to be out of school than urban children.

But education could be the very thing to pull people out of poverty. According to US-based nonprofit organisation Do Something, each additional year of education can increase a person’s future income by an average of 10 per cent.

Girls, and women in particular, could transform the prosperity of their families and their countries, if given a chance at education. If all women had a primary education, 1.7 million children would be saved from stunting from malnutrition, according to United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation’s 2013 Education for All Global Monitoring Report. Educated women are also less likely to die in childbirth, less likely to get married at an early age (such as going through a child marriage), and more likely to find work.
