In a post-World War II world, the “Beats” were American misfits.
They were a group of writers, poets and artists who rebelled against consumerism and a conformist society.
In fact, they were the original hipsters – fashionable, eco-conscious dreamers, who used poetry and literature to speak out against injustice, consumerism, and war.
They adopted the dressing style and vocabulary of jazz musicians, and advocated for greater spiritual enlightenment and awareness about the world and each other.
The term “beat” (literally meaning weary or tired) was coined in 1957 by American author Jack Kerouac, whose novel On The Road, became a kind of manifesto for the movement. It inspired many artists in the following decades.
