Muscat: The announcement from Indian government about the Gandhi Peace Prize for the year 2019 being conferred on the late Sultan Qaboos has been hailed by Oman. Its Ministry of Foreign Affairs tweeted welcoming the award announced in New Delhi and expressed thanks and appreciation to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, as well as to the chairman and jury of the Gandhi Peace Prize.

Omani Foreign Minister Badr Al Busaidi too tweeted about the award and said that everyone in Oman is touched by the award. “We thank our Indian friends most warmly on this tribute.”

Gandhi Peace Prize is an annual award instituted by Government of India since 1995. It recognises the leadership of Sultan Qaboos in strengthening relations between India and Oman, and his efforts to promote peace and non-violence in the Gulf region.

Indian Embassy released a press note about the peace prize and tweeted the news through its handle. The note read that Sultan Qaboos was a visionary leader whose twin policy of moderation and mediation in addressing international issues won him praise and respect across the globe. His role in ensuring peace processes in various key regional disputes and conflicts has earned Oman a unique position across the globe.

Ties between Oman and India reached a new level and flourished under his rule and have been continuing with the same strength even now.
