COVID-19 delays opening of Bahrain’s new airport
The facility has been ready for inauguration since March, says minister
Cairo: The global coronavirus pandemic has delayed the inauguration of Bahrain’s new international airport for over eight months, the kingdom’s Minister of Transportation Kamal Ahmed has said.
“The Bahrain International Airport has been ready for official opening since last March according to the timetable,” he said, according to Al Watan newspaper.
“But in view of what our kingdom and the world at large are experiencing due to the spread of COVID-19 and resulting economic downturn, the actual operation of the airport has been delayed. We are still waiting for directives on its official opening and the onset of operation,” the official added at Bahrain’s consultative Shura Council.
Stretching on 210,000 square metres, the 1.1 billion-dollar facility has a travel capacity of up to 14 million passengers annually, according to media reports.
